Microsoft definitely has enough money to be around for a long time. As for stock price, I do not know where you get the information that their current price of 15.28 as of March 6,2009 is there all time low. Microsoft lowest stock price is March 21, 1986 - back then it was .09, so $15.28 is not their all time low. Please check the current economic environment, stock market is 12 years low and unemployment is 8.1% which is 25 years high. If you think in current economic environment that the microsoft stock at it current price is bad, please tell me which stock is currently at their all time high.

Microsoft has enough money and market share that it will be around for a long time no matter how big the mistakes are. However, it is not a surprise that Microsoft is acting like a patent troll these days. It has laid off 5,000 workers(First time in history) and it's stock appear to be falling at an all time low. Microsoft is scare by the current environment which threatens it growth and control. As Linux continues to be used by start up companies without any dependence on Microsoft. This is what keeps Steve Ballmer up at night.

As I have said in my MSDN blogs. Microsoft has lost ground on Live ID which they wanted every windows user to have. Also Digital Rights Management (DRM) has failed. Since I haven't notice any hardware manufactures implementing it. Also Vista with some of its recently (at least a year back) fixed security flaws, has failed. Now they are putting everything on Windows Azure and Windows 7. This is their last chance. If either fails both will go, since they are keeping the basic principle of Windows 7 just like Vista. Always relying on internet connection. So their last move to businesses and general consumers will be Windows Azure and Windows 7. This may not work completely since Windows 7 is being rushed to replace Vista. Also Windows Azure when I last checked is still in Alpha for both consumers and developers. So we will see what 2010 brings us. At that point we will know if Microsoft will be still standing of if one of the Linux distributions will take its place.

Thanks CBO for a great post.
